While all of us (hopefully) have a more or less well-functioning moral compass, there are various situations sometimes that get the best of us. Before your mind leads you to some next level stuff, we’re talking in reference to lying. We’re not encouraging you to lie, but we all fib a little and tell white lies on and off, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Or is there? Well, that’s what we’re trying to figure out. There are definitely situations in life where it might be a terrible idea to lie, but in some cases, it might not. Here’s what we think.
When it comes to your loved ones
We firmly believe that all relationships are built on honesty, whether with family, friends or partners. So prioritizing honesty in these relationships is highly advisable. But we also think there are situations when it is nicer to lie, for example, if you’re gifted something you hate by your grandma, don’t just straight up tell her to her face when she asks you. You can probably exchange it or give it to someone else later who might like it later, but it could really hurt her feelings if you just blurt it out. Similarly, in not so serious situations like these, weigh the cost of telling the truth versus lying, and think about how much either scenario would hurt the other person.
When it comes to your friends
Again, the foundation of your relationship should be built on trust. But there are situations where you need to keep your trap shut to preserve your relationship. Like when you HATE your best friend’s boyfriend. Unfortunately, the world is such that she needs to make her own mistakes and see the guy for who he is, and when it’s the right time, nobody will stop you from cursing him out. Also, in a situation where you severely dislike your best friend’s other best friend
(from school, college, work, etc.), it is advisable to swallow those emotions forever.
When it comes to your job
Lying when it comes to work is a terrible idea most times. There are more chances of you getting caught than you think, especially if it’s about having completed tasks or meeting deadlines. There are sometimes though when you can sort of get away with telling a slight fib at work – like if you take a day off just to get your mind back in order, or the reason why you got delayed that one day. But don’t make it a habit.
When it comes to general life
Like we’ve made abundantly clear, lying is not a great idea. Yes, fibs and white lies are occasionally called for, but it all depends on the situation and the consequences. If someone you don’t particularly like asks you for advice on something, don’t lie to them just out of spite.
Above all of these, you just need to be honest with yourself, and you will find every way possible way to get out of all the difficulties.
